Campbeltown is by far the smallest malt whisky region in Scotland, since it consists of one remote fishing port on the Kintyre Peninsula of Argyll. It is also home to the fewest distilleries - just three in total. If its glory days have faded now, Campbeltown has certainly paid its dues and deserves its status as an individual region. It was referred to in the Victorian times as "whisky city" because of its sheer number of distilleries. Distilling has taken place on some 35 sites in the borough, and during the mid-1800s there were 21 working distilleries.
